Sound of a name
Arts January 29th. 2008, 3:12pmI have found that incorporating the doumbek drum into my personal life and professional life has opened me up to a musical style that I had previously been unaware of. When I inquired as to the name of the drum, I discovered that it comes from the very unique sound that it makes.
“Doum” is the sound the drum makes when you strike it in the middle, and “bek” or “tek” is the sound the drum makes when you strike it near the rim. I find this as a drummer to be very interesting and smart. But perhaps it is a good thing not all drums are named in this fashion, for it might be a little confusing.
